Online dating has become a way of life for folks looking for love in the freewheeling, tap-and-swipe culture that dominates the 21 st century. According to the Pew Research Center , online dating sites or mobile dating app usage by to year-olds has increased nearly threefold since , while usage by to year-olds has doubled. FaceDate was created by Ph. FaceDate users are able to train the mobile app by uploading photos of faces they find attractive, and the app will provide matches, using a face recognition algorithm. To speed up execution and conserve phone battery life, the app uses cloud-computing infrastructure. And the face recognition tasks can run on your smartphone or be offloaded to the cloud. This novel feature simplifies user interaction and maintains user privacy—all while suggesting a location-based, mutual match in real time. The Android-based FaceDate is currently in the prototype phase on Moitree, a middleware for cloud-assisted mobile distributed apps, and geared toward 18 and 30 year olds. The app developers applied for a patent in , and plan to roll out the first phase of FaceDate exclusively to NJIT students in the coming months, with the hope of securing funding for further development and implementation on iOS.
Digitally desirable: Dating app lets users upload face pics they find attractive
Tinder is a social media dating application that many people use as a modern-day hot-or-not. It enables the user to judge pictures of other Tinderers by swiping right if they like them or left if they do not. It is flirting that removes in person interaction, and despite being an unoriginal app, it has taken the world by surprise with its millions of profiles that are rated daily. Why has this become a social norm? Tinder, along with many other social networking dating apps and sites like OKCupid or Grindr, changed the dating field and have taken it to a whole new level.
Tinder is one of the latest of these apps, and it has managed to overcome a hurdle in online dating: It is cool, modern, and quick.

NJIT Grad Students Invent Slick New Dating App
That’s the underlying concept that inspired a group of computer science grad students at the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology to create FaceDate, a mobile dating app that matches people on two criteria: the attractiveness of their faces and their location. Users upload a photo of themselves and provide some basic information, including birthdate, gender and a brief bio.
Next, romance-seekers are asked to upload a set of headshot photos of people that they find “attractive. Successful matches are notified and allowed to contact each other via a “chat with match” tool. But other than that simple requirement, FaceDate doesn’t care about your charming personality or good sense of humor… it’s all about your looks. While some might criticize the app as a superficial way to go looking for a romantic partner, FaceDate’s developers say that there’s nothing necessarily bad about getting excited about love at first sight.
Courtesy NJIT. That’s the underlying theory behind a new dating app – “FaceDate” – a group of students and professors at the New Jersey Institute of Technology are in the midst of developing. The app uses facial recognition technology to match users with people in their area they might find attractive. FaceDate users upload photos of themselves and pictures of celebrities or others they think are good looking.
The app pairs potential daters who are attracted to each other, based on the appearance data derived from the photos both users uploaded. Other dating apps on the market are text-based, with matches made according to personality and other information users upload, the creators said. FaceDate’s initial pairings are based on photos.
